A devastating road accident has claimed the lives of at least 21 people after a bus ferrying mourners overturned at the Coptic Roundabout along the Kisumu–Kakamega Road. Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander Peter Maina confirmed the fatalities, describing the incident as one of the most tragic road crashes in the region in recent months.
The ill-fated bus was reportedly transporting mourners from a funeral when it lost control and overturned, leaving a scene of chaos and grief. According to preliminary reports, 26 other passengers survived but sustained serious injuries. Emergency responders, including medics and police officers, rushed to the scene to rescue survivors and transfer the injured to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as harrowing, with personal belongings scattered across the road and distraught relatives arriving to search for their loved ones. The cause of the accident has not yet been established, but authorities have launched investigations to determine whether it was due to mechanical failure, human error, or poor road conditions.
The Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander has urged motorists to exercise extra caution on the Kisumu–Kakamega highway, especially at accident-prone spots like the Coptic Roundabout. “We are calling on all road users to adhere to traffic regulations to avoid such devastating losses,” he said.
The tragedy has sparked calls for enhanced road safety measures, with many Kenyans taking to social media to express condolences and demand accountability. As investigations continue, the nation mourns the lives lost in this heartbreaking accident.
