In a heartfelt plea, a Primary Teacher (P1) expressed their growing frustration with the discrimination they feel against Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers and those with higher academic qualifications. The teacher, who chose to remain anonymous, voiced concerns over the perceived unfair treatment of P1 teachers, highlighting that despite having lesser qualifications, they have been actively contributing to the educational system.

The teacher shared, “It is not fair how we are discriminated against compared to JSS teachers or those with degrees. It hurts, even though we have a lesser grade. I personally volunteer in JSS home science and visual arts lessons, areas where the students find it hard. I have taught for the entire two years of my internship, yet we are still discriminated against.”

The teacher emphasized that despite their dedication, including volunteering in specialized subjects like visual arts and home science, P1 teachers are still overlooked in comparison to those with advanced degrees or those working in the Junior Secondary School system. This sentiment is shared by many teachers in similar situations, who feel their hard work and commitment are not being recognized.

As the next term approaches, the teacher affirmed, “Next term, God willing, I will stick to my lane,” suggesting a retreat from volunteer work and a decision to focus solely on their primary responsibilities. However, the teacher’s statement also carries a call for equality in the educational sector.

“I will also pursue a degree,” the teacher added, signaling that despite the challenges, they plan to further their qualifications in order to be treated fairly.
