In response to the ongoing heavy rainfall affecting various regions of the country, the Ministry of Education has taken decisive action to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Following a comprehensive assessment of basic education institutions nationwide, the Ministry has decided to postpone the opening of the second term for all primary and secondary schools.

Reports received by the Ministry of Education, supported by data from relevant government agencies, have highlighted the adverse impact of the rains on numerous schools across the country.

The severity of the damage and safety concerns raised by this assessment have led the Ministry to prioritize the well-being of learners and educators.

Cabinet Secretary Dr. Ezekiel Machogu emphasized that the decision to delay the reopening of schools is rooted in the necessity to implement robust safety measures before students can return to their academic routines.

The Ministry acknowledges that exposing learners and staff to compromised facilities and hazardous conditions would be irresponsible.

The new opening date for the second term is now scheduled for Monday, May 6, 2024. This one-week extension will allow the Ministry, in collaboration with relevant agencies and stakeholders, to undertake necessary measures to mitigate the adverse effects of the heavy rains on school infrastructure.
