In recent weeks, there has been growing confusion and concern regarding a potential strike by junior secondary school (JSS) teachers across the country. This situation has led to many JSS students remaining at home, sparking debates among educational leaders and raising questions about the state of the education system.

Some JSS leaders have confirmed the existence of a strike, stating that teachers have decided to stop working due to various grievances, including inadequate salaries and poor working conditions. “We are fighting for our rights. We cannot continue to work under such poor conditions without fair compensation,” one leader, who preferred to remain anonymous, remarked.

However, other JSS leaders have refuted these claims, insisting that no official strike is in place. According to these leaders, the reports of a strike are mere rumors intended to incite fear among parents and students. “We are working with the government to resolve our issues through dialogue. There is no reason for teachers to strike at this time,” stated one leader from the teachers’ union.

This disagreement has led to a significant rift among JSS leaders. Some teachers have criticized their colleagues for lacking a unified stance and for fostering division rather than unity in their fight for better conditions. “We cannot succeed if we are pulling in different directions. We need to have a single voice to fight for our rights,” said one teacher identified as Jane.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has called for calm and peaceful negotiations between the involved parties. KUPPET has refused to support the strike, emphasizing that dialogue with the government is the best way to resolve the challenges facing the education sector. “We cannot pursue a strike without a solid foundation. We need to work together with the government to find a lasting solution,” said KUPPET’s Secretary-General.

This situation has created anxiety among parents and students, who are now uncertain about the future of their education. Many are calling for a swift resolution so that students can return to their classes without further disruption. “Our children need education. It is crucial that the teachers’ leaders and the government reach an agreement quickly to restore normalcy,” said a parent named John.

At present, there is still a cloud of uncertainty over whether the strike will continue or come to an end, as leaders continue to negotiate with the government in search of a resolution.
