SDA Gospel Singer Mary Claire Ochieng Breaks Her Silence

For the first time since the attack, gospel artist Mary Claire Ochieng has spoken publicly about what led to the acid assault that left her with life-changing injuries.

After nearly four months at Kenyatta National Hospital, Claire says she ended her relationship with Elvis Opiyo after learning he was married with two children. According to her, he would not accept the breakup and kept reaching out, even after she cut off contact.

To prove she was done with the relationship, Claire shared M-Pesa records and text messages showing that she returned large sums of money he had sent and refused gifts he offered.

She also says she reported an earlier assault to police in November 2025, but no action was taken at the time.

Opiyo now faces charges linked to the acid attack. Claire’s account has reignited national conversations about gender-based violence and how such cases are handled.
