Callum Wilson believed he had earned West Ham a dramatic late equaliser against Arsenal, only for VAR to rule the goal out in one of the biggest talking points of the Premier League weekend.
West Ham were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal after Wilson’s stoppage-time strike was disallowed following a lengthy VAR review involving Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.
What Happened?
As West Ham pushed for an equaliser deep into added time, they won a corner that caused chaos inside Arsenal’s penalty area.
The ball dropped kindly for Wilson, who fired a powerful half-volley towards goal. The effort crossed the line after a touch from Declan Rice, and referee Chris Kavanagh initially awarded the goal.
Arsenal players immediately protested, claiming Raya had been fouled in the build-up.
Why Did VAR Disallow the Goal?
VAR official Darren England reviewed the incident and spotted contact between West Ham substitute Pablo and Raya inside the crowded six-yard box.
Television replays appeared to show Pablo holding or blocking the Arsenal goalkeeper as he attempted to reach the cross. After reviewing multiple angles, England advised Kavanagh to conduct an on-field review.
The referee then checked the pitchside monitor before overturning his original decision and awarding Arsenal a free kick instead.
Kavanagh later announced:
“After review, West Ham No 19 commits a foul on the goalkeeper. Final decision: direct free kick.”
According to football laws, goalkeepers are given protection when attempting to claim crosses, especially inside the six-yard area. Officials determined that the contact on Raya prevented him from challenging properly for the ball.
Massive Consequences for Both Teams
The overturned goal proved crucial for both sides.
Leandro Trossard’s earlier goal secured a vital victory for Arsenal, keeping them in control of the Premier League title race heading into the final stages of the season.
For West Ham, the defeat could have serious consequences in their fight against relegation, with the Hammers denied what may have been a priceless point.
The controversial VAR call has already sparked major debate among fans and pundits, with many questioning the consistency of decisions involving goalkeeper contact in the Premier League.
