In a significant operation aimed at curbing the surge of uncustomed goods, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), in collaboration with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), intercepted a lorry loaded with illicit cargo worth Sh56 million in Kajiado County.

The lorry, registration number KBN 216F, was seized along the Kitengela-Namanga road during a multi-agency operation. Upon inspection, authorities discovered 1,135 boxes of Supermatch cigarettes, each containing 5,000 sticks. According to the DCI statement released on X (formerly Twitter) on December 21, 2024, the lorry had falsified declarations during clearance at the Namanga border and misrepresented its cargo in the importation documents.

Crackdown on Smuggling Intensifies

The KRA iTax portal has been instrumental in monitoring tax compliance, and the authority is urging businesses and importers to utilize the iTax KRA platform for proper documentation and clearance. The smuggling of uncustomed goods not only denies the government crucial revenue but also exposes consumers to potentially harmful products.
