In a major crackdown on counterfeit cement operations, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has uncovered alarming details about substandard cement being distributed across Kenya. This follows the arrest of 13 suspects and the detention of eight lorries loaded with adulterated cement, totaling 1,774 bags.
Verification Uncovers Shocking Discrepancies
A thorough verification exercise conducted at the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) offices in Nairobi revealed shocking weight irregularities across the seized bags:
- KCV 426R: 222 bags, mostly 43.5kg, none at 50kg.
- KBG 906A: 83 bags, mostly 39.65kg, none at 50kg.
- KDH 267A: 157 bags, weights ranged from 39.45kg to 50.5kg.
- KAS 410V: 75 bags, weights ranged from 39.4kg to 50.5kg.
- KCK 928T: 251 bags, mostly 38.1kg.
- KAQ 116B: 214 bags, weights ranged from 41.8kg to 58.3kg.
- KAQ 600B: 262 bags, weights ranged from 30.1kg to 51.9kg.
- KCS 951P: 480 bags, lowest at 17.05kg, mostly under 40kg.
Affected Brands and Counterfeit Tactics
Popular cement brands affected include Bamburi Cement, Simba Cement, Blue Triangle Cement, and Mombasa Cement. Shockingly, some counterfeit bags bore fake manufacturing dates marked as 2025, lacked batch numbers, and displayed incorrect corporate colors.
The seized cement not only failed to meet the standard 50kg weight but also contained non-cementing materials like pozzolanic dust, severely compromising quality and safety.
Inside the Criminal Operation
Investigations revealed a disturbing collaboration between rogue employees, including lorry drivers, and unscrupulous hardware owners. The cartel repackaged cement during transit, profiting from unsuspecting customers while endangering lives through compromised construction materials.
Public Warning from DCI
The DCI has cautioned the public, urging vigilance when purchasing cement. Buyers are advised to verify batch numbers, check packaging details, and ensure authenticity to avoid falling victim to counterfeit products.
This illegal trade not only causes financial losses to legitimate manufacturers but also poses significant risks to public safety, as substandard cement can lead to building collapses and loss of lives.
Authorities have assured the public that further investigations are ongoing, and those found culpable will face full legal action.
Stay informed and exercise caution—your safety starts with vigilance.
