Ugandan marathoner Rebecca Cheptegei’s ex-lover, Dickson Ndiema, died on Monday, September 9, 2024, at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya. Ndiema had been hospitalized in critical condition after inflicting fatal injuries on Cheptegei by dousing her in petrol and setting her on fire. He later succumbed to his own burns, which covered 30 percent of his body.

The attack, which occurred on Sunday, September 1, stemmed from a long-standing land dispute between the couple. Cheptegei, a renowned athlete who had participated in the Paris 2024 Olympics and won gold at the 2022 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Thailand, was living in Trans Nzoia, Kenya, where she trained and raised her two children.

According to her father, Joseph Cheptegei, the incident happened when Rebecca was returning home from church with her children. Ndiema, who had previously threatened her, ambushed her at home with five liters of petrol that he had purchased earlier in Endebess. He poured the petrol on her as she attempted to flee and then set her ablaze. Her younger sister, who tried to help, was threatened by Ndiema with a machete, forcing her to run for safety. Tragically, Cheptegei suffered 80 percent burns and died on September 4 after her organs failed.

Burial Plans

Following her death, plans for Cheptegei’s burial have been set for Saturday, September 14, in Uganda. Her family has confirmed that she will receive a military burial to honor her contributions to the country. The athlete’s untimely death has left her family, friends, and fans devastated, as they grapple with the loss of an exceptional talent and a beloved mother.

A History of Disputes

Joseph Cheptegei revealed that the attack was not an isolated incident. The two had been embroiled in a bitter land dispute after their relationship ended, with Ndiema becoming increasingly aggressive over time. Cheptegei had purchased land in Kenya, where she built a house and trained for her races, which eventually became a point of contention between the couple. Their relationship, initially built on mutual support, deteriorated as they clashed over property and other personal differences.

Despite their separation, the dispute remained unresolved, with legal cases still pending before the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya. Ndiema had a history of violent behavior toward Cheptegei, making the attack the tragic culmination of a long-standing conflict.

A Grim Pattern of Violence Against Female Athletes

Cheptegei’s death highlights a troubling pattern of violence against female athletes in East Africa. In recent years, several female athletes have faced threats and attacks from intimate partners, raising concerns about the safety of women in sports. This incident recalls the 2021 murder of Kenyan athlete Agnes Tirop, who was also killed by a partner. The similarity of these cases has reignited discussions on the need for better protection and support for female athletes facing personal and professional challenges.

A National Hero Remembered

Cheptegei, 33, was a trailblazing athlete who represented Uganda on the global stage. Her athletic prowess brought her international recognition, and her contributions to sports have left a lasting legacy. As her family prepares for her burial, Uganda mourns the loss of a national hero whose life was tragically cut short.

Her story serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the vulnerabilities that women, even those in the spotlight, face. The sports community in Uganda and beyond continues to pay tribute to her achievements while calling for systemic changes to protect athletes from similar tragedies in the future.

Final Thoughts

Rebecca Cheptegei’s tragic death underscores the ongoing issue of domestic violence and highlights the need for more robust measures to protect vulnerable individuals. As Uganda prepares to honor her with a military sendoff, her legacy as a top athlete and a dedicated mother will live on, even as her death spurs calls for societal change.
