The long-awaited 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results have officially been released, bringing relief, excitement, and reflection to nearly one million candidates across the country. The announcement was made by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba, with confirmation from the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and senior government officials.

The release marks a defining moment for candidates, parents, schools, and the education sector at large, as the KCSE results determine entry into universities, colleges, technical institutions, and other post-secondary pathways.

Nearly One Million Candidates Sat KCSE 2025

According to KNEC CEO David Njegere, a total of 993,227 candidates sat for the KCSE 2025 examinations in 10,765 institutions nationwide.

The gender breakdown shows near equality:

  • 492,019 male candidates
  • 501,214 female candidates

Girls accounted for slightly more than half of all candidates, highlighting continued progress in gender parity within Kenya’s education system.

Strong Performance Recorded Nationwide

One of the biggest highlights from the KCSE 2025 results is the impressive number of high achievers.

  • 1,932 candidates scored straight A’s, the highest possible grade
  • 270,000 candidates scored C+ and above, qualifying for direct university entry

President William Ruto, while reacting to the results, praised the candidates for their determination and resilience. He noted that out of the nearly one million candidates, half were girls, and a significant number attained the minimum grade required for university admission — a strong indicator of improving academic standards.

What the Results Mean for University Admission

A mean grade of C+ and above qualifies candidates for direct admission into Kenyan universities, subject to placement by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

The 270,000 candidates who met this threshold can now prepare to apply for:

  • Degree programs in public universities
  • Private universities
  • Chartered and accredited institutions

Candidates who scored below C+ still have a wide range of opportunities, including:

  • Diploma programs
  • Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions
  • Certificate and artisan courses

Education officials have emphasized that every KCSE grade has a progression pathway, and no candidate should feel left behind.

KCSE 2025 Examination Period and Integrity
