Kenya’s National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has fired its Vice Chairperson, Wambui Nyutu, after she was found engaging in partisan politics—a direct violation of her oath of office.
NCIC Takes Action Against Partisan Politics
In a decisive move, the NCIC announced the dismissal of Vice Chairperson Wambui Nyutu on Monday, July 22, 2025, following her repeated involvement in political activities that compromised the Commission’s neutrality.
NCIC Chairperson Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia stated that Nyutu’s actions were “incompatible with her role” and undermined public trust in the institution. Despite previous warnings and an apology issued earlier this year, the Commission ruled that her conduct remained “untenable.”
Why Was Nyutu Fired?
The NCIC is mandated by law to promote national unity and prevent ethnic divisions, requiring its officials to remain strictly non-partisan. However, Nyutu was accused of openly supporting political factions, breaching Section 7 of the NCIC Act, which bars commissioners from engaging in political activities.
“Public office demands impartiality. When leaders take sides, they erode the very cohesion they are sworn to protect,” said Dr. Kobia.
Formal Removal Process Begins
Nyutu’s dismissal as Vice Chair is only the first step—the NCIC has now initiated proceedings to remove her as a Commissioner entirely. The process involves parliamentary approval, meaning the matter could soon escalate to lawmakers.
In her place, the Commission has appointed Dr. Dorcas Kedogo as the new Vice Chairperson, effective immediately.
Public and Legal Reactions
Legal experts argue that Nyutu’s case sets a precedent for enforcing accountability among public officials. “The NCIC’s decision reaffirms that no one is above the law,” said constitutional lawyer Mercy Mutemi.
However, some political analysts suggest the move could be politically motivated, given Kenya’s charged political climate. Nyutu has yet to issue a public statement.
What Happens Next?
With Nyutu’s removal underway, questions linger over whether other officials facing similar allegations will face scrutiny. The NCIC has vowed to uphold neutrality, but critics demand stricter enforcement of ethical standards across all public offices.
