Kiriani Boys High Principal Under Fire Over Handling of Student’s Death.

Kiriani, July 6, 2024 – The Principal of Kiriani Boys High School, Ben Masila, is under intense scrutiny following the death of a Form One student who succumbed to injuries sustained during a violent altercation in the school’s dormitories. The incident, which took place shortly after Friday evening preps, has raised serious questions about the school’s emergency response protocols.

According to a statement from Principal Masila shared with teachers via WhatsApp on Saturday afternoon, the student died while receiving treatment at PCEA Chogoria Mission Hospital. “We have lost a Form One student who was undergoing treatment at PCEA Chogoria Mission Hospital today,” Masila conveyed. “Teachers and I rushed them to hospital and doctors did a good job. However, one boy passed on.”

However, sources familiar with the situation have voiced significant concerns regarding the manner in which the school handled the emergency. Reports suggest that Principal Masila did not arrange for immediate medical assistance using a fully equipped emergency vehicle. Instead, the injured student was transported to the hospital by alternative means, with the principal following in his private vehicle.

An anonymous insider at PCEA Chogoria Mission Hospital indicated that this decision might have cost the student crucial time that could have been pivotal for his survival. “This choice may have deprived the student of critical moments that could have been life-saving,” the source noted.

The tragic incident has prompted a wave of criticism from various quarters. Parents, teachers, and community members have expressed their outrage and sorrow, calling for a thorough investigation into the school’s handling of the situation. Many are demanding accountability and transparency from the school administration.

“We are devastated by the loss of such a young life,” said a parent who requested anonymity. “The school must explain why proper emergency procedures were not followed. This is unacceptable and someone must be held responsible.”

In response to the growing outcry, reports have been filed with the police, the Ministry of Education, and the families involved. Authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and the school’s response.

Education experts have highlighted the importance of having well-defined and practiced emergency protocols in schools. “Schools must have clear and efficient emergency response plans in place,” said Dr. Jane Mwangi, an education consultant. “These plans should include the availability of emergency medical services and trained personnel who can act swiftly in case of an emergency. Delays can be fatal, as we have unfortunately seen in this tragic case.”

The death of the student at Kiriani Boys High School has also sparked a broader conversation about student safety and the need for adequate supervision and conflict resolution mechanisms within educational institutions. “Schools are meant to be safe havens for students,” commented a teacher from a neighboring school. “Incidents of violence and inadequate emergency responses undermine this fundamental principle.”

As the investigation unfolds, the community remains on edge, awaiting answers and hoping for justice for the young student whose life was cut short. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the critical need for vigilance, preparedness, and accountability in ensuring the safety and well-being of students in educational institutions.
